Really I'd do 3。5/5。After reading all of the other Tolkien books this year, a lot of this was a giant review。 At times it was interesting, at others the textbook-style writing was dull。 I'd say you only need to read this if you're looking into deeper Middle-Earth lore, though I'd recommend spacing out your reads of all of the other lore books so you're not doing them right next to each other。 Really I'd do 3。5/5。After reading all of the other Tolkien books this year, a lot of this was a giant review。 At times it was interesting, at others the textbook-style writing was dull。 I'd say you only need to read this if you're looking into deeper Middle-Earth lore, though I'd recommend spacing out your reads of all of the other lore books so you're not doing them right next to each other。 。。。more

This book is like the Wikipedia of LOTR, written before such a thing ever existed。

I loved reading this book! It's a great way to find out more about Middle Earth and to get other stories in this world。 I loved the story of Aldarion and Erendis, everything about Tuor and the stories about the third age。 Great book, great reading, you can go read it if you love everything Tolkien :) I loved reading this book! More stories from Tolkien! My favourite was the tale of Aldarion and Erendis。

Such a random collection of writings, but fascinating; definitely worth a read if you’re interested in the background details of Tolkien’s world! The Second Age material was definitely my favourite: Aldarion and Erendis is such a complex and nuanced short story, and The History of Galadriel and Celeborn (on the absolute opposite end of the completeness scale) is both a brilliant character study and a really illuminating look at Tolkien’s creative process。

Not exactly essential reading but for a lore deep dive there’s some incredibly interesting stuff in here so it is worth the plunge。

🥀 ‘Of this two things are said, though which is true only those Wise could say who now are gone。’This felt like coming home but sweet Eru was Grandpa Tolkien a perfectionist。 Those indexes had me pausing multiple times to cross-check。。。

Okay, so it’s not that I didn’t like this book because it’s Tolkien, and it’s hard not to like Tolkien。 It’s just that I didn’t find it particularly gripping。 I guess you could compare it to something like The Silmarillion, especially in terms of its scope and its complexity, but I was more interested in the subject matter of that one because I already knew a decent amount about a lot of the stories that were in there。Of course, if you’re a massive Tolkien fan then you’re going to want to read t Okay, so it’s not that I didn’t like this book because it’s Tolkien, and it’s hard not to like Tolkien。 It’s just that I didn’t find it particularly gripping。 I guess you could compare it to something like The Silmarillion, especially in terms of its scope and its complexity, but I was more interested in the subject matter of that one because I already knew a decent amount about a lot of the stories that were in there。Of course, if you’re a massive Tolkien fan then you’re going to want to read this regardless, even though it does feel a little bit… well, unfinished。 I guess the clue is in the name and I should have expected that, but for whatever reason I just found that I was expecting it to be great and it was just okay。It was still worth reading though, if only to get a little bit more of the worldbuilding that Tolkien was known for and to learn a little bit more about the history of Middle Earth。 My edition also included a bunch of supplementary information like maps and family trees, which was interesting to read in passing but which didn’t necessarily help with the fact that it didn’t feel much like I was being told a story。Tolkien’s writing style can also be pretty dense, and it was arguably at its densest here, even more so than it was in the Silmarillion。 Again, part of that might be down to the fact that these are Unfinished Tales, and so they probably could have benefited from some rewriting and some editing, although it’s not as though I’m qualified to tell Tolkien what to do。 At the same time, I do think that this is definitely a more supplementary work, rather than something that you’d hold up to point to his genius。The good thing is that there’s a lot here to spark your imagination, and I can imagine film-makers and even fan-fiction writers having a blast here。 You could make a couple of seasons of a TV show set in Middle Earth without even scratching the surface of what’s here, so perhaps it’s most interesting to think of it as almost a series of prompts that Tolkien left behind。And I did still enjoy it, it’s just that it was definitely what I think of as a bedtime book, something that I chipped away at bit by bit in the evenings。 I picked it up with the idea that it would be my main read, and it quickly became apparent that that wasn’t going to happen。 It’s just not that kind of book, it isn’t built for entertainment。 But even with that said, you can still enjoy it if you have the right mindset, so there’s that。 。。。more

Really interesting series of tales that give so much more depth to the rest of Tolkien’s stories。 I enjoyed the way it was told with the references to more detail。 It’s not something that necessarily has a plot or that you will read through quickly, but a must for those who want to have a deeper understanding of Middle Earth and why things were the way they were in the Hobbit and LOTR。

Unreadable。 I’m baffled that someone can make a perfect trilogy like LOTR and then come up with stuff like this。 It was like reading a text book on fake mythology。

This took me a little to get into, mostly because I didn’t care too much for the first story。 It definitely has me wishing there were certain tales that we were able to know how they would have been published。 I’d recommend reading the Silmarillion before reading this, I think there would be a lot that would have been easier for me if I had read that prior to this。

Approach this book as a college text on the history of Middle-Earth with a few compelling stories interspersed。 Memorable characters and places were shaded with new insights thanks to this text。 Those "gifts", though, were hard earned。 For instance, I almost DNF'd this when the movements of the horse-people (that became the Rohirrim) at the beginning of the Third Age were expounded upon at length。 I will be eagerly awaiting the day when the march of Eorl and his eotheod from northwest Rhovanion Approach this book as a college text on the history of Middle-Earth with a few compelling stories interspersed。 Memorable characters and places were shaded with new insights thanks to this text。 Those "gifts", though, were hard earned。 For instance, I almost DNF'd this when the movements of the horse-people (that became the Rohirrim) at the beginning of the Third Age were expounded upon at length。 I will be eagerly awaiting the day when the march of Eorl and his eotheod from northwest Rhovanion comes up amongst friends。 Thanks to this book, I will have something meaningful to contribute。 。。。more

Christopher Tolkien should have left well enough alone and honored his father‘s wishes that these “stories“ never saw the light of day… While I have no doubt that there are certainly people who are such fanatics about J。R。R。 Tolkien that they find this interesting… They’re dry … they’re repetitive… They’re just not good… I’ll wait to read the novelizations of these stories to see how they play out … but I’m not holding my breath。

Becca

As good as ever。 A bit diminished by the the more full versions of of the three big tales Christopher has since published but great all the same

Siento que este es un libro que hay que tener de cabecera cuando se trata de saber algunos de los detalles más desconocidos del canon de la Tierra media。 Tiene demasiada información muy específica entre narrativa, textos tipo reporte y notas aclaratorias。

Unfinished Tales is dense。 It certainly was intriguing as these “lost tales” were collections of short stories, poems, or explanations of larger lore within middle earth。 This is the type of text, where in order to fully grasp it (which is a tall order given the extreme detail and the assortment of how these collective works were assembled), one would need to have already read Tolkien’s LOTR series as well as the Silmarilion。 Christopher Tolkien displays his impressive editing power as he commen Unfinished Tales is dense。 It certainly was intriguing as these “lost tales” were collections of short stories, poems, or explanations of larger lore within middle earth。 This is the type of text, where in order to fully grasp it (which is a tall order given the extreme detail and the assortment of how these collective works were assembled), one would need to have already read Tolkien’s LOTR series as well as the Silmarilion。 Christopher Tolkien displays his impressive editing power as he comments along the way where these pieces came from, what version, how many versions there are of one piece, and sometimes the year when it was written。 Unfinished Tales reads like a nonfiction because of Christopher’s insertions。 I found the most interesting parts of the book, outside of specific tid bits of trivia here and there, were Christopher’s comments on how great and powerful ideas and statements concerning important characters and elements of Tolkien’s universe were scribbled on the sides of paper or in some cases hastily written and thus illegible。 These added details brought more life to the book and gave a sneak peak into the creatively clustered mind of J。R。R。 3/5 。。。more

5/5 。。。more

I've finished it! It's really good, and there's so much interesting and fascinating stuff about the Middle-Earth, Sauron, Isildur, Galadriel as well as the best known Third Age。 Unfinished Tales is not as dark (and metal lol), though, as The Silmarillion, and it also reads a bit differently。 There's a ton of non-fiction writing from Christopher Tolkien, i。e。 the comments on different writings, dates and whatever his father meant or could've meant。 Some of the remarks are thrown in the middle of I've finished it! Although J。R。R。 Tolkien wrote and rewrote stories about the world of Middle-earth throughout his life, he was not the type of writer whom people would call a "prolific writer"。 This is because many of those stories did not reach the publication stage within his lifetime。 The only major books about Middle-earth that reached that stage within Tolkien's life were The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings。 It was his son, Christopher Tolkien, who set those stories about Middle-earth for publication。 This Although J。R。R。 Tolkien wrote and rewrote stories about the world of Middle-earth throughout his life, he was not the type of writer whom people would call a "prolific writer"。 This is because many of those stories did not reach the publication stage within his lifetime。 The only major books about Middle-earth that reached that stage within Tolkien's life were The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings。 It was his son, Christopher Tolkien, who set those stories about Middle-earth for publication。 This is why avid fans of the Middle-earth universe can now read books like The Silmarillion if they want to delve deeper into the fantasy world。What is notable about Unfinished Tales is that it has stories and essays about each of the Three Ages of Middle-earth。 The First Age is about the resistance of the Men and Elves against the first Dark Lord named Morgoth。 The Second Age is about the kingdom of Numenor and Sauron's forging of the One Ring。 The Third Age is when hobbits become famous for helping the other Free Peoples of Middle-earth。 This gives the book quite a broad coverage。 Even if the stories in this book are not finished, I still immensely enjoyed them。 They were full of interesting characters and fascinating settings。 They are written in lively and lyrical prose。 I think that this book can be enjoyed by anyone who is an enthusiastic reader of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings , and The Silmarillion。I guess I kind of wish that Tolkien got to finish these stories。 There were just so many great narratives and descriptions in this book。 Even if those works were not finished, I am hoping that people could still enjoy them in this book。 。。。more

Tolkien, like Lewis, makes goodness attractive。 His characters have so much depth, his world is full of wonder and longing, and his storytelling is beautiful。 In Unfinished Tales you get to look over Tolkien's shoulder and look at the intricate details of his world, characters, and stories (some unfinished)。 It takes patience and concentration (as another reviewer said)。 It doesn't read fast, and this is a book for Tolkien nerds who want to uncover more gold as the rabbit hole keeps getting deep Tolkien, like Lewis, makes goodness attractive。 His characters have so much depth, his world is full of wonder and longing, and his storytelling is beautiful。 In Unfinished Tales you get to look over Tolkien's shoulder and look at the intricate details of his world, characters, and stories (some unfinished)。 It takes patience and concentration (as another reviewer said)。 It doesn't read fast, and this is a book for Tolkien nerds who want to uncover more gold as the rabbit hole keeps getting deeper。 The more time you spend in Middle Earth while being enchanted by its excellence, the more beauty and joy you find。This book shows you how great Gandalf is, uncovers the mystery of the palantiri and the wizards, reveals characters you didn't know existed, and tells some sad stories intermingled in it all。 Galadriel is highlighted。 And the scene with Ulmo is grand。This one took me awhile to finish but well worth the patience。Unfinished doesn't mean it's not worth the journey。 。。。more
